DAY FOURTEEN: Get TOTALLY fabuLESS: How to QUICKLY organize ALL of your coupons: store, restaurant, printable, and clippable, too!
In my opinion people spend WAY too much time dealing with their coupons– at some point it’s NOT worth it. Which is why most people start out all gung ho and then a few months in they simply give up– and who can blame them? So STOP investing time into getting ridiculously overly organized and start utilizing your time fabuLESSly well instead. Here’s my simple method to organizing my coupons and shopping– all in all, I spend UNDER 15 minutes a week dealing with coupons and so should YOU!
Store and Restaurant Coupons:
Grab a small makeup bag or something similar (the one picture to the left is ONLY $4.99 shipped, check it out HERE) and whenever you get a coupon for a store (i.e. 20% off Gymboree, $10 off $50 at Old Navy, etc), either in the mail, printed from the internet, or anywhere else– simply tuck the coupon into this bag and keep it in your purse (or alternatively, put the bag in your vehicle if you don’t carry a purse!) There is NO need to alphabetize, organize or do anything else to these coupons– if you want to, you can have a list (with expiration dates, too!) of the coupons, but I don’t bother doing so, it’s easy enough to look through and see what I have in there, no need to get crazy ;) Also, if there’s a coupon that I *know* that I *must* use, I simply tuck that one coupon in my wallet so I won’t miss it!
Alternatively, you can even use an envelope and, as an added bonus, you can even write ON the envelope which coupons are in there– personally, I prefer to have one high quality bag (preferably in a BRIGHT color so it’s easy to find in the black hole that I call a purse!) over using envelopes.
Also, if you have a LOT of coupons, then divide the restaurants from the stores and get a second bag, that’s all– fabuLESS!
Coupon Inserts (from the Sunday paper):
I have THREE of these mobile filers (click HERE or here: http://amzn.to/oTHiBC to grab them for ONLY $8.76 SHIPPED), mine are in THREE different colors, but you don’t have to use different colors. These are high quality and do NOT rip. I use each filer for ONE type of insert– one for Red Plum, one for Smart Source, and one for everything else (like P&G, my local store monthly and weekly coupon fliers, etc)– I simply write the date on the FRONT of the ENTIRE insert and tuck it in. THAT’S IT. And, once the insert is 4 months old (1 month for P&G), I toss/recycle it and NO, I do not look through it either, after 4 months +/- 95% of the coupons are expired and if I haven’t used the remaining unexpired coupons within four months, I probably won’t ever do so (for MORE details on my fabuLESS UNclipped method, click HERE)
Alternatively, you can have 3 manilla folders for your coupon inserts, but like always, I’d rather buy a high quality, durable item ONCE rather than having to constantly replace manilla folders– plus I love that these filers close securely.
Oh, and I do NOT these filers with me, they live in a tote bag in my home and NEVER, EVER leave. More on how I organize my shopping trips in tomorrow’s post!
I rarely print them unless I see them ‘matched’ up to a sale on a matchup (if you have NO idea what I’m talking about, click HERE) Or, if I’m looking for a specific product and I’m about to head out to buy something– I’ll check the searchable coupon database found HERE or here: www.livefabuLESS.com/database and print the ONE coupon I need and go. I do NOT print coupons and hope that I find a good sale, I used to do just that and I likely spent more on wasted ink and paper than I ever saved in store, so I don’t print unless and until I’m about to actually USE it.
“Special” Coupons– CVS Extra Care Bucks, Walgreen’s Register Rewards, Gymbucks, etc
If a coupon is basically like cash– then it should go where cash goes– your wallet! Also, for coupons that you WANT to use before they expire, those should go in your wallet, too! Also, make a note in your phone or paper planner a few days BEFORE you *hot* coupon BOTH starts (in the case of coupons that you get WAY before they’re valid) and when the coupon expires (plus ON the actual date of expiration, of course!) to remind you to use it so you don’t find it the day AFTER it expires, ugh, don’t you hate that?
Coupons should NOT take over your life, they’re only fabuLESS if you control them instead of them controlling you!
